Brief status report about smartphone market, mid-2008
Having followed the news of mobile industry in the past week, I thought it would be worth collecting some articles in a single post to see things from a bird's view, thus having a better overview on what's been going on lately on smartphone market.RIM has been getting stronger in US market and Palm is unhappy with that. Although Palm's popularity had started to fall even before Apple entered mobile phone market, the new iPhone has just "helped" to boost the process. As to Apple, new countries have confirmed August launch enabling iPhone (3G) to gain bigger popularity and increasing its market share in other countries than US. In addition, the name of iPhone Nano has appeared again whispering words about the introduction of this device still this year. Apple is on its way to become stronger and stronger, but they're still in the "Other" segment of mobile devices according to ABI Research. And if Apple is making tsunami "from the bottom", Nokia is doing the same from the top with their price cut - I wouldn't like to be the stuffing in this sandwich.It seems that we're living the time of foundations: this time it's LiMo that has picked up 11 new members to become stronger in the fight against Google OHA and Symbian Foundation. With the first LiMo handsets out, I wonder how they can catch up with industry leader Symbian, the also very powerful Windows Mobile and the likes. I did not mention Android deliberately, because to me it still exists only on "paper".As to the creator of Windows Mobile, it's already well-known that Microsoft's Silverlight will come to S60. What is rumoured now, though, that Zune would also be available on Nokia devices. 1.1.3 Unlock and Linux Driver
The IPSF exploit still works in the 1.1.3 baseband, and now that we know Apple doesn't update the bootloader it appears to be safe to use. IPSF works using the RSA padding hack in bootloader 3.9, so as long as the bootloader is 3.9, I can't see it breaking. Here is reference code I wrote to do the IPSF unlock a while ago. With a few mods, elite can turn their virginizer into an IPSF unlocker. I wouldn't bother with the AnySim patches anymore, they are lost after every restore, and need to be modified for each version of the baseband. Be warned though, back up your seczone before IPSF unlocking. IPSF erases your NCK token.Also I was playing around with writing linux drivers, and I figured I'd start one for the iPhone. Here is what I have so far, it only works in recovery mode. You can echo iBoot commands to /proc/iphone/cmd

Here's my annotated version of the iPhone 3G board(just my educated guesses, not 100% accurate). Thanks to iFixit for the picture and getting the teardown out there so quickly. I don't know whats on the bottom of the board, but I figure the NAND flash must be there.

trip the first 0x800 bytes from your >= 1.1.1 firmware ramdiskRun:openssl enc -d -in ramdisk.dmg -out de.dmg -aes-128-cbc -K 188458A6D15034DFE386F23B61D43774 -iv 0Ignore the error. Then there will be some garbage, signatures and certificates, at the end of the file. Remove it and mount your ramdisk.Why would this key be published without any explanation of what it is? Apple knows what it is, not telling us how to use it doesn't serve a purpose for anyone. I don't know exactly what this key is or where it came from. But I do know it decrypts ramdisks :)Nice job to Zibri, the dev team, and whoever owns Austin Heap for finding this key, I'd love to see the hack used. Sadly this will not help us unlock BL 4.6 phones, or sign our own SDK apps; sign anything for that matter. But hopefully this key is deeply embedded in the iPhone, and decrypting all future ramdisks will be a piece of cake.

iPhone 3G Unlocked?
So I read this on gizmodo. Here's the truth...Post beta 4, the ramdisk hack stopped working. Sorry Zibri, guess you'll have to steal another exploit. They also changed the recovery mode USB protocol to use the control endpoint to send commands. The possiblity of unlocking, which is very distinct from jailbreaking, is based entirely on the baseband bootloader. Apple doesn't appear to upgrade the bootloader on phones in the field, probably for fear of bricks. So any old iPhones out there today, regardless of version, can be unlocked.The iPhone 3G uses a different bootloader, which I believe there aren't any known exploits in yet. So no unlock.There is a known exploit in iBoot, on both the old and 3G iPhones. The "the specific date/time is not firm yet" pwnage tool will leverage it to jailbreak all 2.0 software iPhones, 3G and otherwise. Dev team, that date better be soon or I might just have to release yiPhone. The iBoot exploit is yours, use it. You wouldn't want a repeat of ZiPhone now...
New Ramdisk
In the KBAG section of the img3 files, you'll find 0x20 bytes after the section header. Decrypt them with the hardware AES engine and getIV: 29681F625D1F61271EC3116601B8BCDEKEY: 850AFC271132D15AE6989565567E65BF(this is the 2.0 ramdisk)
yiPhone and otherwise
I still can't believe how many people believed yiPhone. It's amazing how a couple lines of javascript(the counter) can piss so many people off. I was just trying to push dev to work a little harder ;-)I have never done the jailbreaks for any previous versions of the phone, what makes you think this one would be different? I also like to think I have more honor than using someone elses exploit before they do. And really, who was the mascot in the picture? Yorro? Once he exists, maybe yiPhone will exist.Also, heres why a certain person claimed the DFU was the key. You could, without any exploits, upload the 114 iBoot(even to the 3g), the 114 kernelcache(ok, this crashes on the 3g), and a hacked ramdisk. But the filesystems don't mount. And even if they did, you'd need a way around sig checking.Here is a little program(with source of course) to run whatever you want at the DFU level; an implementation of the dev pwnage 2.0 exploit. Pass it a binary file, it will start executing at the start of the file(no file formats to deal with). I'll leave it to dev to explain the exploit used.
Nokia N78 Review
I haven't had much hands on time with the N78. I recall seeing an early prototype at a testing session, and I was less than impressed. When the handset was officially announced, I was at a press event at the Nokia store in London. Seeing the handset there, I changed my mind and thought it could be a worthy successor to the almost mythical N73. As I said, my hands on time with the phone is severely limited, however Rafe over at All About Symbian has an excellent in depth review, in three parts.
